Creating Custom Area Rugs

Start with any style of carpet: Robertex, Dixie Home, Couristan, Glen Eden, Helios, Queen, Shaw, Mohawk, Kathy Ireland or any other carpet that is on the market. There are literally millions of different patterns, styles and colors. Then, choose your binding. There are many binding to choose from: Colored, plain or patterned bindings. Binding come in many different patterns: Balloons, Flowers, Leaf prints, stripes, shapes, dots, patterns, farm animals. Anything you can imagine, you can get. If we don’t have a binding you like in our showroom, we can get it custom made. Basically any pattern of fabric can be made in to a carpet binding, as long as it is a sturdy fabric. Some people do buy simple fabrics at a local fabric store, and bring them to us to use as their binding. This can be done, we just tell customers that the sturdier the fabric, the longer their area rug will hold up.

I'll give you a great example of a custom rug that we just made in our store last week.

First, our client came in and said that she had a home she wanted a really large area rug one that was about 25 foot long and 18 foot wide. She wanted the rug for her family room, but she was completely undecided about what to choose.

Our first step was to ask her basic questions about her home. Number one: What type of flooring do you already have installed? She said she had a natural Bamboo flooring installed that was very light. Our second question was: What type of feel is your home? Or, what type of decorations do you have? She said that right now her home did not have very many things in it. It was a new home and almost empty. But, she wanted her home to feel like she was at the beach. My last question was: How much traffic will the rug receive? She said she had 2 kids, and her house was grand central station to everyone in the neighborhood! She also said that she liked to entertain quite often so she wanted something that would resist stains, clean up very easily and be durable.

After many considerations I decided to recommend that she go with a Seagrass type of rug with a custom binding. Seagrass is extremely durable. It can hold up very well under extreme wear and tear. Also, when you get stains on Seagrass, they clean very easy. I told her that most of the time if you make a weak bleach and water solution, this will clean Seagrass very well. Just spray it on the stain, and when it dries the stain is gone. My other consideration was the Bamboo flooring underneath the rug. Bamboo is beautiful, but is basically a very soft floor and can get scratched easily. I know I have had several customers that have refinished their bamboo after only 5 years because of too many scratches. The reason the Seagrass is good for the bamboo, is that you can get a rubber backing attached as part of the rug. This rubber backing makes the rug stay in place very well, so there are no scratches on surfaces underneath. Other Area Rugs can move a little, and this scratches the flooring underneath.

The last thing to decide was the binding. Because she wanted her home to feel "beach like" I showed her several patterned bindings that had prints of palm trees and other leaves on them. Her final choice was a dark brown binding with palm tree leaves. She got the rug bound in a 7" binding, so that 3 1/2" of the binding showed. The Seagrass she chose was a product from Robertex. The Style Aaah! Color Praline. This Seagrass has a slight pattern with a brown stripe. So, the brown binding with the leaves made it just beautiful. And, she now has a room that is beautiful that she absolutely loves spending time in.
